Gosling Goes to Google

James Gosling, programmer extraordinaire known for his work as a Java founder at Sun Microsystems, joined Google today. (I have learned that it is wise to watch where brilliant people go and don’t go. :-)When Oracle acquired Sun Microsystems last year, Gosling did not join Oracle. In fact, Gosling has referred to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison as “Larry, Prince of Darkness.” Oracle has sued Google for patent and copyright infringement over how Android uses Dalvik software that is similar to Java.

Gosling announced the move to Google on his blog today. (When I worked at Sun, I always “got a kick out of” the occasional photo of Gosling speaking in a Macintosh T-shirt. He has stated, “I do most of my engineering on my Powerbook.” That would be a MacBook Pro in today’s parlance.)

CNET’s Stephen Shankland notes that Google shares some characteristics with Sun, but is much more commercially successful. Shankland says “And unlike Sun, it’s managed to become a household name.”

I think that the key word in that sentence is “managed.” :-) And history supports me….
