Arnold says…
Former California governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, gave a keynote address at the ARPA-E Summit in National Harbor, MD, today. I have always found Schwarzenegger to be a fascinating politician – a man with several of the truly Republican “quirks” and yet with the intelligence to both understand and believe the science behind reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
(Note added March 3, 2011: For Republicans of the USUAL type, see THIS entry.)
(Note added March 5, 2011: Long-time readers of this blog know that I try to “ding” both of the major political parties equally – the MISTAKES that each makes are so DIFFERENT! )
Today, Schwarzenegger suggested a way PAST the current governmental log jam in debating the science of global warming. BTW, this is one of the differences between science and politics – politicians BELIEVE that they can debate the science WITHOUT BEING EDUCATED in the the science, whereas scientists generally DO NOT! I wonder how the politicians feel about self-medication (do-it-yourself brain surgery?) or representing themselves in a court of law!
(As Forrest Gump said, “Stupid is as stupid does!”
) Schwarzenegger suggested that people should focus on IMMEDIATE benefits from investments in green technologies. These benefits include economic growth, improved health, consumer savings from efficiency, and reduced dependence on foreign oil.
Schwarzenegger said that about 100,000 premature deaths each year can be linked to the use of oil. He said that 1 in 6 children in California’s Central Valley has to walk around with an inhaler. Schwarzenegger mentioned a California ballot issue last fall to scale back environmental legislation that was supported by coal companies in Ohio and oil companies in Texas. The issue was defeated.
Job growth in green technologies has been higher in California than in other areas. Schwarzenegger cited an algal fuel that reduces greenhouse gas emission and which is being tested by the U.S. Navy!
Schwarzenegger sees the disconnect between the energy policies that politicians SHOULD be crafting, and the debate over global warming in which the politicians are currently spinning their wheels.
