2010 wine grape harvest: third largest in history

Good news for wine drinkers…!

California wineries crushed 3.58 million tons of wine grapes in 2010, the third largest in CA’s history, according to the Preliminary Grape Crush Report released today by the California Department of Food and Agriculture! Numbers last year were exceeded only by the 3.67 million tons in 2009 and the record harvest of 3.76 million tons in 2005.

Crop preservation and newly planted acreage helped to offset some analysts’ concerns about unfavorable weather conditions and crop damage. Although production in the northern interior of California was down 22%, production in the southern interior increased 5%.

According to Steve Fredricks, president of the Turrentine Brokerage in Novato, as reported in the Sacramento Bee:

“Wine consumption continued to grow through the recession, but some consumers traded down to less-expensive wines. We’re starting to see those consumers trade back up, which is good news for wineries and growers.”

Many brands have cut their inventories and now need wine to satisfy growing sales.

As my father once explained to me, “When times are bad, people drink; when times are good, people drink!”
